We are here for you!
Find out how a CPM (Continuous Passive Motion) machine can help you recover faster from your knee or hip surgery.
What exactly is a CPM machine?
A therapeutic device that passively moves the affected joint through a prescribed Range of Motion (ROM). Both speed and degree of bending motion (extension/flexion) can be adjusted in accordance with the surgeon's recommendations. The CPM machine fully supports your joint, making it a pain free and very comfortable experience. All you need to do is relax and let the machine do the work. Usually it will be used immediately after a surgery, though depending on the type of injury you could also use it pre-op when mobility and pain is an issue.
Research and how it works anatomically?
There are decades worth of scientific literature proving the benefits/value of the CPM.
The most recent consensus highlights that the optimal results would come from the use of a CPM machine in combination with active Physiotherapy treatments and exercises.
The use of a Continuous Passive Motion (CPM) device in the initial 2-4 weeks immediately after the surgery (meaning; starting the CPM use on the day of surgery) is the "prime time" for the highest gains in Range of Motion (ROM) and pain decrease.
After this initial phase you may choose to continue using the CPM device, though the active approach with a Physiotherapist will become the primary focus onwards to gain the best end results for ROM, strength and stability.
Anatomically CPM machines are proven to reduce swelling by promoting the Lymphatic drainage, increasing blood circulation, inhibiting the formation of scar tissue and increasing your range of motion (ROM) over the course of treatment, thus increasing your recovery speed.
One of the things that can cause the most pain is the buildup of fluid inside the affected joint. The buildup of excess fluid puts extra pressure on your nerves and can also limit your range of motion by making the joint feel stiff. The CPM helps your Lymphatic System drain excessive fluid from the joint and stimulates blood flow to the area.
Less swelling = Less pain = More ROM = Faster healing

Yes, 'Ortho Rentals' rents CPM rehabilitation equipment for personal use. We offer the Artromot-K3 and Artromot-K4 knee and hip CPM machine.
Simply put, it passively moves the affected joint through the Range of Motion (ROM). It may seem counterintuitive but moving the joint sooner after your surgery can speed your recovery and decrease the amount of pain. The CPM helps remove excess fluid from the joint and stimulates blood flow to the area. If your joint is less stiff and less painful, you are more likely to experience a positive outcome.
Yes. You will need a prescription if you are renting any CPM equipment from us. Even though we are all registered physiotherapists and highly knowledgeable, we still require the approval of your surgeon or GP.
